These frightful flicks were so well done that they could not be ignored, however, and they at least received nominations, if not wins: Psycho (1960) — four nominations: Best Supporting Actress (Janet Leigh), Director (Alfred Hitchcock), Cinematography, Black-and-White (John L. Russell) and Set Decoration, Black-and-White (Joseph Hurley, Robert Clatworthy and George Milo); Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) — winner for Fredric March as Best Actor (he tied with The Champ’s Wallace Beery), and also nominated for Adapted Screenplay (Percy Heath and Samuel Hoffenstein) and Cinematography (Karl Struss); Poltergeist (1982) — nominated for its visual effects, sound effects editing and Jerry Goldsmith’s musical score; What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? On April 4, 1923, brothers Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner founded Warner Bros., one of Hollywood’s most iconic studios, which has produced countless classic films over the past century even as it also expanded into television and other media outlets. Turner Classic Movies is celebrating the studio’s centennial, and tracing its history, all April long, with famous films (every title on this month’s schedule is a WB production), several documentaries and special nights devoted to legendary Warner Bros. stars like Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis. Today’s lineup features productions from the studio’s early years, spanning the end of the silent era and the rise of “talkies.” In fact, the famous Warner production that was the first feature-length sound film and sent the message that talking pictures were here to stay, The Jazz Singer (1927), is part of the schedule, airing in late-night. Also of note, earlier in primetime, are The Brothers Warner, a 2007 documentary presenting the inside story of Warner Bros. made by Cass Warner, Harry’s granddaughter, and the TCM premiere of the 2023 documentary Cinema Finds Its Voice.

For April Fools’ Day, the Mistress of the Dark offers films both hilariously bad and scary. Enjoy the furry-faced antics of Dean Stockwell in 1973’s somewhat intentionally comic horror flick The Werewolf of Washington. The following year saw genre mainstays Christopher Lee (as the title character) and Peter Cushing (as Van Helsing) costar opposite Joanna Lumley in The Satanic Rites of Dracula. And no less a star than Joseph Cotten plays the reanimating Baron in 1971’s Lady Frankenstein.

The Ten Commandments

Nearly every year since 1973, with a few exceptions, ABC has re-aired this gigantic 1956 Best Picture Oscar-nominated religious epic on or around Easter — even though it relates more to the Passover holiday, given that its story comes from the Old Testament book of Exodus about Moses’ (Charlton Heston) deliverance of the Israelites from slavery at the hands of Egyptian pharaoh Rameses II (Yul Brynner). That tradition continues this year, as the network airs director Cecil B. DeMille’s thrilling achievement tonight, eight days before Easter. Already a very lengthy film in its original format, the TV broadcast somehow seems to keep getting longer each year thanks to commercials, so if you’re recording the movie, be aware that your DVR will get quite a workout — ABC has it scheduled in a four-hour-and-44-minute time slot! But with a moviegoing experience this grand, the time flies by. It’s easy to say “they don’t make ’em like that anymore” regarding such films, but in the case of The Ten Commandments, that is literally true — with its massive live crowd shots (of both people and animals) and spectacular set designs, the cost of creating a film like this in the manner in which it was produced would certainly be viewed as prohibitive by any studio today. From an era in which biblical epics were fairly common in Hollywood, DeMille’s work is one of the few that remains so highly watched and beloved to this day. Along with Heston in his iconic role as Moses (and as the voice of God via the burning bush) and Brynner, the film is also star-studded with the likes of Anne Baxter, an oddly cast Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo, Debra Paget, John Derek, Vincent Price, John Carradine and more. DeMille is at the height of his directorial powers here as he wrangles so much into a captivating, if melodramatic, presentation. Among the film’s other technical achievements are its Oscar-winning special effects, and it also boasts a grand musical score by Elmer Bernstein.

The 2022 Norwegian World War II drama War Sailor, one of the country’s biggest theatrical hits of the year, is expanded into this three-episode miniseries by writer/director Gunnar Vikene, who also wrote and directed the movie. “War Sailor was originally written both as a feature film and as a miniseries,” Vikene explains, “and I couldn’t really let go of the initial idea of telling the story in both formats.” The miniseries features new scenes that weren’t able to be incorporated into the film, and, like the feature, is based on true stories of Norwegian merchant sailors and their families during and after the war.

The 2023 Major League Baseball season is now underway after officially starting last Thursday, and MOVIES! is getting into the swing of it with a hard-hitting lineup of five classic baseball movies airing this afternoon and evening. Leading off is the Oscar-nominated biographical drama The Pride of St. Louis (1952), about the life of Hall of Fame pitcher Jerome Herman “Dizzy” Dean (portrayed by Dan Dailey). Joanne Dru and Richard Crenna, in one of his earlier film roles, costar. Next is the comedy It Happened in Flatbush (1942), whose story is inspired by the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers’ first pennant win in 21 years. Lloyd Nolan plays a washed-up ballplayer who returns to Brooklyn to manage his old team, but ends up clashing with — and falling for — the new owner (Carole Landis). Then, in the comedy It Happens Every Spring (1949), Ray Milland plays a chemistry professor who accidentally discovers a fluid that repels wood. Realizing the possibilities from applying this to a baseball, he takes a leave of absence to join the big leagues, where he becomes an unhittable pitching sensation. Jean Peters and Paul Douglas costar. Batting cleanup is The Kid From Left Field (1953), which re-teams star Dailey with his Pride of St. Louis director Harmon Jones. In the comedy, a struggling baseball team goes through a phenomenal transformation when a washed-up former player (Dailey) secretly passes winning tips to the team through his son, who is the team’s batboy (Billy Chapin). But can the turnaround last when the team owner promotes the kid to manager? The film costars Anne Bancroft in one of her earlier film appearances. Today’s final film is Angels in the Outfield (1951), the original comedy led by Douglas, Janet Leigh and Keenan Wynn.

Directed by Robert Aldrich, this darkly humorous and horrific cult classic is deliciously gothic and campy fun as it follows an aging former child star (Davis, in a Best Actress Oscar-nominated performance) who torments her paraplegic sister (Joan Crawford), a former movie star, in an old Hollywood mansion. The success of the film opened up doors for these and other actresses to star in subsequent similar types of psychological thrillers led by older women, and one of those, also starring Davis, is next on tonight’s lineup: Hush … Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). Also helmed by Aldrich, this psychological thriller stars Davis as an aging, reclusive Southern belle plagued by a horrifying family secret who descends into madness following the arrival of a lost relative (played by Olivia de Havilland). Costarring alongside the iconic actresses are other stars who were in the latter stages of their careers: Joseph Cotten, Agnes Moorehead and Mary Astor in her final film role.

Following that is the Oscar-nominated submarine thriller Destination Tokyo (1943), led by Cary Grant and John Garfield; director Raoul Walsh’s Oscar-nominated Objective, Burma! (1945), starring Errol Flynn and based on the real-life actions of Merrill’s Marauders in Burma; and director Michael Curtiz’s Oscar-winning musical comedy This Is the Army (1943), based on Irving Berlin’s Broadway musical and starring George Murphy, Joan Leslie and Ronald Reagan. The lineup concludes with Across the Pacific (1942), a spy film set in the days ahead of America’s entry into the war. The movie reunites The Maltese Falcon costars Bogart, Mary Astor and Sydney Greenstreet, and was originally helmed by Falcon director John Huston. Vincent Sherman took over in the director’s chair after Huston joined the U.S. Army Signal Corps, where he made films about the war as a uniformed captain.

In the premiere, the docs see a squirrel with dental issues, perform a C-section on a hognose snake and attempt to remove a tumor from a moray eel … on a house call.
